Raúl dos Santos

(1931-2007)

He was born in São Pedro parish, on December 12th 1931, son of Cosme dos Santos e de Maria do Monte dos Santos. He got married with Leonor Pereira on November 26th 1951. From this marriage 8 children were born, 4 boys and 4 girls: José Eduardo Pereira dos Santos, Raul Pereira dos Santos, João Pedro Pereira dos Santos, João Rafael Pereira dos Santos, Teresa de Jesus Pereira dos Santos, Margarida Maria Pereira dos Santos, Rita Maria Pereira dos Santos and Fátima de Jesus Pereira dos Santos.

According to his son, Raúl, his dad learnt to work with wood with his grandfather, who had specialized himself in making rebound tools, some of them with inlays.

Raúl dos Santos was in France, in the Bressuire Exhibition from the 1st to the 4th of March, 2005, showcasing several pieces that he ends up selling, dedicated to the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

At the inauguration of the Centro Cívico of Santa Maria Maior on April 18th, 2007, he offered the President of the Regional Government of Madeira, Dr. Alberto João Cardoso Gonçalves Jardim, a sewing box featuring inlaid work, on behalf of the Boa Nova Folklore and Ethnographic Group.

He passed away on June 8th, 2007. He was self-taught in wooden inlay works and he was also the last craftsman and inlay master who lived solely and exclusively from his art.
